Bendito Destino is an ambitious, boutique wine project in Spain’s Ribera del Duero, established in 2020 by celebrated sommelier-turned-winemaker Terry Kandylis. The venture began when Terry, en route to the Canary Islands in late 2020, discovered neglected centenarian vineyards amidst the high-altitude (up to 925m) landscapes surrounding Canalejas de Peñafiel, the region’s highest village. Struck by their potential and heritage, he began piecing together small old-vine plots, gradually assembling about 8 hectares, with 40% of the vineyards now older than 100 years.
The estate is unique for its reverence toward old, ungrafted bush vines (“en vaso”), many dating back to the early 20th century, and for championing field blends rather than monoculture. Most vineyard parcels are mosaics of up to seven indigenous grape varieties, with red plantings including Tempranillo (the main grape), Garnacha, Bobal, and Monastrell, plus the rare white varieties Albillo Mayor, Jaen Blanco, and Malvasia Riojana. This biodiversity not only honors history but nurtures complexity in the wines.
Farming is ecological and low-intervention, preserving biodiversity and practicing spontaneous fermentations with wild yeast. In the cellar, Terry applies a light touch inspired by Burgundian methods: gentle extraction, a mix of whole berry and whole bunch fermentations, and restrained oak aging. Each vineyard is harvested and vinified either as a field blend or, in the case of several flagship bottlings, as a single-site cuvée, yields are naturally low, with total annual production in the low thousands of bottles.
The range includes the flagship “Field Blend” Tinto, a supple, pure red with layers of floral, red fruit, and herbal notes; “Albillo Mayor” white from a centenarian plot; “Clarete” (a traditional regional style rosé blend); and six micro-production single-vineyard wines, each showcasing the site’s character and the potential of these singular old vines. Terry Kandylis, sometimes joined by Guillermo Cruz, oversees all winemaking. Each bottle expresses Bendito Destino’s ethos: protecting the past, reviving neglected treasures, and delivering vibrant, elegant wines that channel both Ribera’s history and the finesse of Burgundy.
