Alonso & Pedrajo Viticultores is a boutique wine project established in 2013 in Villalba de Rioja, at the western edge of Spain’s famed Rioja region. Founded by two families united by friendship, Alberto and Gema, Javier and Vanesa, the domaine embodies the spirit of a new generation seeking to interpret the ancient terroirs of the Obarenes Mountains with creativity, authenticity, and an unwavering commitment to the land.
Unlike traditional Rioja dynasties, the partners are the first in their families to dedicate themselves to viticulture and winemaking. Inspired by forgotten vineyards and untended parcels at the extreme limits of Rioja’s winegrowing zone (590–640m altitude), Alonso & Pedrajo have painstakingly reclaimed small, distinctive plots, valuing diversity of soils, microclimate, and site above quantity. Their flagship estate, Finca La Cala, nestles in a ventilated valley beneath the Obarenes, divided into seven unique plots that showcase the region’s dramatic, stony orography.
Winemaking at Alonso & Pedrajo is guided by minimal intervention and respect for terroir: all work, from vineyard to bottle, stands on observation, intuition, and honoring the natural quality of the grapes. Intervention is kept to a minimum, no recipes, no additives, no fining, and as little manipulation as possible, to produce wines with soul and expressive character. The cellar, 80% underground and naturally ventilated by the north wind, is designed for sustainability and seamless integration with the land.
The domaine boasts a dynamic range reflecting their philosophy: traditional reds and whites like Suañé and Valdinero, experimental wines including La Pequeñita, and pure, unfiltered expressions such as Nauda, a skin-macerated wine made without additives or filtration. Each bottle is a testament to the project’s roots in discovery, community, and the patient revival of Rioja’s highland viticultural heritage.
